Exterior Painting Checklist
PREP STAGE
• Inspect the home’s exterior (rot, peeling, mildew, cracks)
• Calculate square footage and purchase paint/primer
• Choose paint type and color
• Check weather forecast (dry, mild days)
• Inform neighbors (optional but courteous)
PROTECTION
• Cover plants, walkways, and fixtures with plastic or drop cloths
• Tape off windows, lights, doors, and trim
CLEANING & SURFACE PREP
• Power wash entire surface
• Let house dry completely (24–48 hours)
• Scrape loose/peeling paint
• Sand rough edges and glossy areas
• Dust or rinse off sanding residue
REPAIRS & CAULKING
• Replace damaged wood or trim
• Patch holes and cracks with wood filler
• Sand patched areas smooth
• Apply exterior-grade caulk to seams and joints
PRIMING
• Prime all bare wood and repaired areas
• Prime entire surface if changing color drastically or surface is heavily weathered
PAINTING
• Start at top (gutters/fascia), then walls, then trim
• Use sprayer, roller, or brush as appropriate
• Apply first coat evenly
• Let paint dry completely
• Apply second coat
