Interior Painting Checklist
PLANNING & PREP
• Decide which rooms/walls to paint
Choose paint color(s) and finish (e.g., eggshell, satin, semi-gloss)
• Calculate square footage and buy enough paint/primer
• Check for drywall damage, stains, or mold
• Remove furniture or move it to the center and cover with drop cloths
• Remove switch/outlet covers, curtain rods, and hardware
SURFACE PREP
• Clean walls with mild soap or degreaser (especially in kitchens)
• Fill nail holes, dents, and cracks with spackle or joint compound
• Sand patched areas smooth
• Spot prime or fully prime if needed (new drywall, dark colors, stains, etc.)
• Caulk around trim, windows, and doors if gaps are visible
TAPING & PROTECTION
• Lay down drop cloths to protect floors
• Tape off baseboards, window frames, trim, and adjacent walls if needed
• Ventilate the room (open windows or use fans)
PAINTING
• Stir paint thoroughly
• Use a brush to cut in along edges and corners
• Roll paint onto walls in “W” or “M” motion for even coverage
• Let the first coat dry completely (follow paint label)
• Apply second coat for solid, even finish
TRIM, DOORS & CEILINGS (If Applicable)
• Paint ceilings first (if included), using flat/matte paint
• Paint baseboards, crown molding, and door frames with a small brush or trim roller
• Paint doors last, allowing time to fully dry before closing
CLEANUP & TOUCH-UP
• Carefully remove painter’s tape before paint fully cures (prevents peeling)
• Clean brushes, rollers, and trays
• Replace outlet covers, curtain rods, and hardware
• Do final inspection and touch-ups
• Dispose of or store leftover paint properly
• Take after-photos if needed (for records or portfolio)
